Deutsche Welle the German broadcaster has aired a document released by the German Foreign Office dating back to 1989, which shows that an unnamed Syrian man walked into the West German Embassy in Damascus and donated the equivalent of a month's wages (2,000 Syrian pounds - 255 Deutschmark at the time) to help East German refugees who were trying to reach West Germany via Hungary and Czechoslovakia just ahead of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
