Microsoft Edge’s Migration to Chromium Explained
Microsoft isn’t killing Edge; it’s just moving to a new engine that would come with a series of benefits
Microsoft has recently confirmed plans to move to the Chromium browser engine, and this decision has been received with mixed reactions by users out there.
For many, it was the long-awaited confirmation that Microsoft Edge failed, while for others, moving to Chromium was seen as a way to surrender to Google’s domination in the browser market.
But at the end of the day, Microsoft’s migration to Chromium isn’t just the software giant embracing a different path. It’s actually a decision that produces major changes for both the company and its users.
And as I discovered in the last couple of weeks since the official Microsoft announcement, there are a lot of unclear details about how the transition to the Chromium engine would go.
Will Microsoft kill Edge completely? How will the new browser be called? Why is Microsoft doing this? Let’s answer all these questions one by one.
Microsoft isn’t killing Edge browser
First and foremost, I think this is the most important tidbit. Microsoft is not killing Microsoft Edge, it is just changing the engine that powers it. By switching from EdgeHTML to Chromium, Microsoft Edge becomes a lot easier to maintain, and at the same time, it also gets some extra benefits, such as support for a larger collection of extensions.
Furthermore, with Google Chrome now dominating the browser market with more than 60 percent market share, most of the websites are perfectly optimized for it.
And as I discovered the hard way, there are quite a lot of websites out there that didn’t load correctly on Edge. So beginning with the updated version of the browser, they should all work correctly.
Edge will support ALL Google Chrome extensions
As said above, by moving to Chromium, one of the major benefits is that the new Microsoft Edge would come with support for all Chrome extensions.
This is exactly what happened in the case of other browsers that are based on the Chromium engine, like Opera and Vivaldi, so Microsoft Edge shouldn’t make any exception either. Microsoft has also confirmed that all Chrome extensions would be supported.
The app will be updated more frequently
One of the biggest setbacks of Microsoft Edge was the update system. The browser was only updated when Microsoft rolled out new OS feature updates, like the October 2018 Update (also known as version 1803), so it got new features and improvements only twice every year.
There were plans to move Microsoft Edge to the Microsoft Store, but for some reason, this idea was dropped eventually, probably as the software giant was considering the transition to Chromium.
EdgeHTML won’t be retired overnight
The biggest concern for developers is that EdgeHTML would go away and all their apps and services that are based on this engine would stop working. This isn’t going to happen, Microsoft says.
And I would add that this won’t happen overnight, so expect the software giant to provide more details when they are ready. What we know for now is that EdgeHTML would still be there, though Microsoft will become fully focused on Chromium.
The look of the browser will be unchanged
Microsoft Edge will look and feel just like it does right now. Microsoft isn’t planning any changes in this regard, though it makes sense for the UI to be improved at some point in the future.
But the bottom line is that the transition from one engine to another will be seamless for users. This means that although the browser would be completely different under the hood, it won’t feel different in day-to-day use.
A preview build of the new Microsoft Edge will ship in early 2019, while the stable build will arrive at a later time. There are no other specifics available right now, as this is still work in progress, but expect more information to be provided as the project advances.

YouTube denies intentionally breaking its website on Microsoft Edge
Earlier this week, a former intern at Microsoft's Edge team accused Google of sabotaging the browser by designing its own websites to work poorly on it. The accusations followed Microsoft's announcement that it would be moving on from the EdgeHTML rendering engine and build a new browser based on Chromium.
Specifically, the accusation mentioned a change made to the YouTube website, which added an empty div at the top of the video player. This made Microsoft's browser unable to use its video acceleration and lose out on battery life.
Now, a YouTube spokesperson has told The Verge that this is not the case, and that the company does not try to undo optimizations made by other browsers:
Microsoft's decision to give up on EdgeHTML may ultimately be its own fault. In maintaining browser updates tied to the semi-annual Windows 10 updates, the company made it much harder to keep up with changes made to websites.
Since its inception, many fans have asked for the browser to be updated through the Microsoft Store, and at one point Microsoft seemed to be considering it, but that never came to be. Building Edge on the Chromium project will most likely help the Redmond giant address this problem, though not everyone agrees that's a good thing.

Here's what's fixed, improved, and still broken in build 18305
In typical Microsoft fashion, the weekly Windows 10 build for Insiders in the Fast Ring is out on a Wednesday, and build 18305 actually included a handful of new additions. These include the new Windows Sandbox experience announced earlier today, improvements to Windows Security, and much more.
However, as usual, there's more to this release than new features. Build 18305 comes with a long list of fixes and general improvements, including a Settings app crash when opening Speech Settings. Here's the full list:
Of course, even with all those improvements, there are a few issues to be found in this release. Specifically, devices in S Mode may fail to install the update after restarting. Here's what you need to be aware of:
Developers also have one specific issue to be aware of:
Build 18305 is the last one to be released in 2018, as the holiday season draws closer. In January, Microsoft will be kicking off the only Bug Bash planned for this release. Today, the company also announced that the dates for the bug-squashing event have been moved to January 23 through February 3.

Judge Recommends Dropping ISP Grande’s DMCA Safe Harbor Defense
Texas-based Internet provider Grande Communications has no right to a safe harbor defense, US Magistrate Judge Andrew Austin argues. The ISP failed to adopt and reasonably implement a repeat copyright infringer policy. Judge Austin, therefore, recommends granting the RIAA labels' motion for summary judgment on the matter. And there's more bad news too.
Last year several major record labels, represented by the RIAA, filed a lawsuit against ISP Grande Communications accusing it of turning a blind eye to pirating subscribers.
According to the RIAA, the Internet provider knew that some of its subscribers were frequently distributing copyrighted material, but failed to take any meaningful action in response.
Grande refuted the accusations and filed a motion to dismiss the case. The ISP partially succeeded as the claims against its management company Patriot were dropped. The same was true for the vicarious infringement allegations.
The labels were not willing to let go so easily. They pushed on with several new filings, including a motion for summary judgment, arguing that Grande has no safe harbor defense.
In order to enjoy safe harbor protection, the DMCA requires ISPs to adopt and reasonably implement a policy for terminating the accounts of repeat copyright infringers. According to the labels, it is clear that Grande failed to do so. As such, the company should be held directly liable.
Yesterday, US Magistrate Judge Andrew Austin issued his “report and recommendation” on the matter, which delivers a significant setback for the Internet provider.
According to the Judge, the undisputed evidence shows Grande had a policy that allowed it to terminate repeat infringers, but that the ISP failed to act on this for years. As such, the policy was not adopted and reasonably implemented.
“Grande affirmatively decided in 2010 that it would not enforce the policy at all, and that it would not terminate any customer’s account regardless of how many notices of infringement that customer accumulated, regardless of the source of the notices, and regardless of the content of a notice,” Judge Austin writes.
The evidence shows that Grande did not terminate a single repeat infringer between October 2010 and June 2017. This was effectively confirmed by the ISP’s own corporate representative.
“A ‘reasonably implemented’ termination policy requires that the policy be enforced, and not just adopted. Because the evidence is undisputed that Grande never enforced its policy during the relevant time period, it is precluded from raising the DMCA safe harbor defense in this case.
“It is hard to imagine a case in which it is more clear that the DMCA safe harbor is not available,” the recommendation reads.
In its defense, Grande argued that it did enforce a repeat infringer policy after the lawsuit was filed but, according to the Judge, this was “too little too late.”
The Internet provider also argued that terminating customers wasn’t appropriate because the copyright infringement notices sent by Rightscorp were flawed. However, Judge Austin concludes that this is no defense, as there is no evidence that Grande ever considered terminating a user.
On top of that, the concerns regarding Rightscorp’s notices don’t explain why similar complaints from other sources were also disregarded.
“Yet another failure with Grande’s argument about the Rightscorp notices is that it does not address the several hundred thousand copyright infringement notices it received from companies other than Rightscorp,” Judge Austin writes.
In weighing the arguments the Judge looked closely at the BMG v. Cox case, which was very similar. In that matter, the court concluded that Cox didn’t have a safe harbor defense and Judge Austin argues that that same should apply to Grande.
If the U.S. District Court Judge adopts this recommendation, it will be a major win for the labels of the RIAA. Without a safe harbor defense, ISPs are not shielded from contributory liability for the actions of pirating subscribers.
And there is more bad news for the ISP as well.
Grande requested summary judgment in its favor on a variety of liability issues, including direct infringement, willfulness, damages, and ownership of copyright. These are all under recommendation to be denied, except for two limited issues regarding the alleged violation of reproduction or public performance rights.
The RIAA labels also submitted a cross-motion on these liability issues, requesting a ruling in their favor, but that was denied as well. This means that the matters will be decided at trial.
While Judge Austin’s recommendations have yet to be adopted, both reports and recommendations have definitely not improved the outlook for Grande.
A copy of the safe harbor recommendations is available here (pdf), and the recommendations on Grande’s motions for summary judgment and the labels’ cross motions can be found here (pdf).
Update: we clarified that without a safe harbor ISPs aren’t shielded from contributory liability for the actions of pirating subscribers.

Twitter Suspects China & Saudi Arabia Over Recent Hack
Twitter has recently reported a suspected State-sponsored attack through its contact form, possibly connected with Saudi Arabia and China.
Although several cyber attacks have been launched on social networking sites, the involvement of State-backed threat actors sounds alarming. Recently, in a bid to spread false news, several attacks have been launched on social networking sites. So there lies every possibility that this was done in pursuance of a similar motive. However, Twitter has stated that it is not absolutely sure of the attack being state-sponsored.
An official Twitter blog post reportedly stated
The Bug
Twitter has been a victim of several cyber attacks, but this one seems to be the most fearsome as it hints towards the possibility of a Cyber War. According to reports, Twitter’s Support Form, which a person could use to reach out to Twitter and let a third party access country codes and account statuses of Twitter users.
In November, Researcher Terence Eden uncovered a Twitter Support Form flaw, which could easily be exploited by third persons. Eden was awarded US $ 2,940, under HackerOne’s Bug Bounty program for reporting this bug.
Further Investigation
Upon further investigation, Twitter uncovered certain “suspicious activity” connected with one of its API’s, which turned out to be an exploitable flaw related to the customer support form. It took the Social Networking firm about 24 hours to fix it.
Twitter’s official Blog post stated
According to Twitter, it has reached out to the affected users and informed them about the incident.
However, there seems to be no action required by the users as the bug has been already fixed. Further, the social networking site has claimed to have diligently reported the incident to the concerned authorities.

Introducing Project Mu
The Microsoft Devices Team is excited to announce Project Mu, the open-source release of the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) core leveraged by Microsoft products including both Surface and the latest releases of Hyper-V. UEFI is system software that initializes hardware during the boot process and provides services for the operating system to load. Project Mu contributes numerous UEFI features targeted at modern Windows based PCs. It also demonstrates a code structure and development process for efficiently building scalable and serviceable firmware. These enhancements allow Project Mu devices to support Firmware as a Service (FaaS). Similar to Windows as a Service, Firmware as a Service optimizes UEFI and other system firmware for timely quality patches that keep firmware up to date and enables efficient development of post-launch features.
Bringing Firmware-as-a-Service to Open Source
When first enabling FaaS on Surface, we learned that the open source UEFI implementation TianoCore was not optimized for rapid servicing across multiple product lines. We spent several product cycles iterating on FaaS, and have now published the result as free, open source Project Mu! We are hopeful that the ecosystem will incorporate these ideas and code, as well as provide us with ongoing feedback to continue improvements.
What about Features?
Project Mu includes:
A code structure & development process optimized for Firmware as a Service
An on-screen keyboard
Secure management of UEFI settings
Improved security by removing unnecessary legacy code, a practice known as attack surface reduction
High-performance boot
Modern BIOS menu examples
Numerous tests & tools to analyze and optimize UEFI quality.
We look forward to engagements with the ecosystem as we continue to evolve and improve Project Mu to our mutual benefit!

Manhole Covers Serve as Antennas Expanding Wireless Network Coverage
Manhole antenna solution offers glimpse into 5G strategies for signal propagation
By Dexter JohnsonBy Dexter JohnsonBy Dexter JohnsonBy Dexter Johnson
Photo: Vodafone
The inconvenient truth of future 5G networks is that their increased high-speed bandwidth, and the use of the millimeter wave spectrum (the radio spectrum above 30 gigahertz) to achieve it, comes at a price: Those radio signals barely propagate around the corners of buildings.
To overcome this issue, the strategy has been a combination of small cells with massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antennas to increase coverage. Small cell deployment will be so extensive that the Small Cell Forum predicts 5G small cell will overtake 4G small cells by 2024. The total installed base of 5G or multimode small cells will reach 13.1 million by 2025, constituting more than one-third of the total small cells in use.
So, how do you manage to get all of these small cells dispersed throughout a city landscape where buildings are everywhere and there’s little open space for signals to travel?
Engineers at Vodafone, headquartered in the United Kingdom, have come up with an ingenious solution: make manhole covers do double duty as antennas for mobile communications. This clever solution manages to avoid all the troubling issues that had worried many observers about the proliferation of small cells. It eliminates traffic disruptions from street construction, and there are no antennas awkwardly placed on buildings, marring the appearance of a neighborhood.
This solution is currently being used for existing 4G networks, but Vodafone engineers believe this could be a solution for future 5G networks as well. “The manholes do provide an opportunity to deliver solutions in dense urban environments,” said James Grayling, senior network deployment manager, Vodafone UK.
While there is a possibility that the manhole covers could be used for 5G networks—and Vodafone gives a fair amount of credence to the connection in their press release—a Vodafone spokesperson remained noncommittal as to whether this will indeed be a part of Vodafone’s overall 5G strategy.
“We envisage that we may be able to use the manhole coverage solutions for 5G rollout going forward but this is still to be decided,” said Ally Stevens, a network media relations manager for Vodafone UK.
Nonetheless, Grayling did reveal some of the manhole antennas’ impressive capabilities. “The antenna currently being used has a frequency range of 1695 megahertz to 2690 Mhz, and is being used with 4G where download speeds of up to 195 megabits per second can be achieved,” said Grayling.
While it may seem that the big metal manhole covers would interfere with signals, Grayling insists that is not the case.
“The manhole does not interfere with the mobile signals, although there is a small level of power loss caused by the manhole,” said Grayling. “This is taken into account when designing where we want to deploy such solutions.”
It’s not yet clear how extensive the deployment of the special manhole covers will be. When asked whether there was any number of manhole antennas they were targeting to be put out into the field, Vodafone’s spokespeople demurred. “We are in the process of identifying assets in our fixed network that can be best utilized to meet the needs of the mobile network,” was all Grayling would say in response.
