Apple support phishing scams are getting really good

You know those voice mails you get claiming to be from "Windows support"? It looks like scammers are upping their game with convincing phishing calls claiming to be from Apple, security expert Brian Krebs said in a report Thursday. The scam starts an automated call showing Apple's logo, address and legitimate Apple phone number that warns the user to return the call because of a data breach, according to the security website. The message then gives a 1-866 number to call back. That number is "a known phishing source," the security analyst said. "The exploit is unique because it allows callers to masquerade as other callers essentially by polluting search results with junk information that makes one number look like the contact number for a real company," Krebs wrote on his blog. "The number ... to call is a known phishing source. Remember: If anyone calls you claiming that your computer is broken they are most probably lying." Apple didn't immediately provide a comment on the report. On its website, the company offers advice on how to deal with different scams, including phone calls. "If you get an unsolicited call from someone claiming to be from Apple, hang up and contact us directly," the company says. We'll repeat what we've said before. The IRS will never call you for money. Microsoft and Apple customer support won't call you about a widespread data breach. AT&T and Verizon won't tell you to re-enter your ID and account info to restart your account. If you aren't sure, go to the company's website and call the number listed there -- not the one the voice mail told you to call. source

Luas, a Dublin-based tram operator was forced to shut down their website after a data breach. The details of over 3000 users is believed to have been compromised during a cyberattack which was performed sometime around January 3rd. Accessed details fortunately contain no financial information as was clarified by a company representative. Users who earlier tried to access the luas.ie website were greeted with a somewhat ominous message which read in full: It should be noted that at the time of writing, 1 bitcoin is the equivalent of over 3000 Euros. The message concluded with a bitcoin address where the hacker(s) looks forward to receiving payment. As of now, there’s no guarantee Luas will pay the ransom. In response to this, the website has been temporarily shut down and a reply posted on Twitter on January 3rd: Later that day, another tweet followed: Because the website is currently offline, Luas suggested to their members to follow them on Twitter for any updates. We’ll be looking out on Twitter as well for any info relating to who perpetrated the attack and when the website will be ready for online use. source

The exposed information includes user first and last name, email address, IP addresses, hashed passwords and passwords hints. Abine said that users critical data was not exposed in the data breach and there is no evidence usernames and passwords stored by users in Blur, auto-fill credit card details, Masked Emails, Masked Phone numbers, and Masked Credit Card numbers were compromised in the breach. The company also confirmed user payment card details were not exposed in the breach. The exposed data contains information of users of who had registered an account prior to January 6, 2018. According to SecurityWeek, around 2.4 million users were impacted by the data breach The company has advised users to change their Blur password and if you have used the same password in other accounts also it is advised to change that also. All users are advised to always use long and unique passwords for your accounts and enable multi-factor authentication. “As a privacy and security focused company this incident is embarrassing and frustrating. These incidents should not happen and we let our users down. We apologize and are working very hard to ensure we respond quickly and effectively to this incident and make sure we do everything we can to not let anything like it happen again.” source
